The plot revolves around 26-year-old Nella Rogers, an editorial assistant at the fictional publishing house Wagner Books. Nella is relieved when another Black woman, Hazel, begins working at the predominantly white company. Then Nella starts feeling even more isolated than before, as she receives threats to leave Wagner, whilst Hazel becomes the office favourite. It then dawns on her that her hopes of a black girl magic alliance are quickly evaporating as Hazel may not be quite who she seems.
